How to create a mood board

February 19, 2016

How often the inspiration comes to you?  Do you like to dream? In the previous post, I wrote, how to find sources of inspiration. It has recently become popular to visualize own ideas and dreams. Any of you can make own board for inspiration or wishes.

In my home space for creativity is a workplace. And although it occupies a small space of the room, for me it's the whole world. Here I can sit for hours, completely forgetting about the time. In order to inspiration never left me, over my desk hangs an inspiration board (mood board). From own experience I can say that such inspiration board is a good tool in order to always be in the creative tone and easily start a work. On this cork board, I visualize everything and attach what I like: various clippings from magazines, runways, pictures of style icons, postcards, famous quotes, etc.
Below, you can see how I created a mood board.

Here are some tips to help you create a mood board:
  • Determine the direction or topic of your interest. So you can more quickly find the right material and create mood board.
  • To search for the desired image Use old magazines, brochures, photographs or postcards. You can also print out your favorite quote or a picture from the Internet.
  • Do not be afraid to use unconventional materials, such as pieces of cloth, a herbarium, sketches, different textures and patterns, etc.
  • As a basis, use a cork board or a clean sheet and for fixing clippings - thumbtacks or adhesive.
  • Try to fill all the space.
  • Follow your inner voice, mood board is an expression of your personality.
  • Ready collage must hang over the workplace.

I hope that my tips will help you and you will not have long to wait for new ideas. Have you used mood boards in your hobby?

xoxo, Stacy

  5. I love the idea of an inspiration board and I think that the one you've crafted looks quite nice. I'm spending time now, sitting here writing out this comment, wondering what I would put on my board? I would probably begin by cutting out a photo of the new acoustic guitar I want from that Guitar Center advert. I would probably include a photo of my fiancee and our kitten. Maybe some photos from places that I want to visit.

For me, though, the things that I create are very niche. I write about music and I write about villains in comics, movies, and books. I'm not sure that I would be able to find any definitive symbols to represent these things that would inspire me. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. Thank you for your comment! To complete your board inspiration, you can place text of favorite song next to a guitar or a photo of the musician whose playing guitar inspires you. Around pictures of places you want to visit, you can attach a map with marked route. You can also print out a few common phrases in the language of the country you plan to visit.
      Wish you good luck!

  17. I used to have a mood board above my desk. At first it was a lot of fun filling it up, but then it kind of became a task to regenerate it later. I would wait months to fill it up. But it sure is pretty and colorful to look at.
